Autumn watch – Time to get roofs ready for winter with high performance roofing cap sheets

As summer fades into autumn and night arrives ever earlier, winter is on the horizon. But it’s not just about watching Kate Humble talk about hibernating hedgehogs.

No.

As the seasons take a distinctly chilly turn it’s the ideal opportunity to think about waterproofing roofs. And that’s where high performance roofing cap sheets come in very handy.

Choosing the right product for the job

The importance of using the right material can’t be overstated. In addition to price, things to consider include:

  • Life expectancy.
  • Laying characteristics.
  • Fire performance.

Fix-R SBS

This tried and tested torch-on membrane gives long-term durability backed by meaningful product guarantees (12 years for Fix-R). This product features:

  • Tough polyester reinforcement for added mechanical strength
  • Dimensional stability and puncture resistance
  • Highly engineered elastomeric formulation for improved laying properties in different weather condition
  • High temperature stability throughout the summer months
  • Enhanced flexibility when working in lower temperatures

Crucially, this product won’t let you down on site. Plus, with increased bitumen content in the coating, it’s far easier to obtain the necessary bleed at the laps. All in all you’ll get the extra peace of mind that waterproofing integrity will not be compromised at this vital part of the roof.

Fix-R

Reassuringly heavy, these robust membranes help reduce the occurrence of foot marking on site by reducing heat transfer through the membrane during torch-on application. This improves the overall aesthetics of the final job, keeping the customer happy!

Apply to:

  • Suitable pour and roll or torch-on underlays as part of a built-up system.
  • As a refurbishment overlay to existing asphalt or selected mineral surface bitumen membranes.

FIX-R Liquid Waterproofing

When it comes to flat roofs, FIX-R – the new liquid waterproofing system from SIG Roofing, the largest supplier of roofing materials in the UK – is fast becoming the number one choice amongst roofing contractors for its ease of application and cost-effectiveness.

Suitable for new build, repair and refurbishment projects – and even appropriate for balconies, terraces and walkways – FIX-R is a single liquid hybrid polymer system that is Isocyanurate free and contains no solvents. Unlike other waterproofing systems, it has very low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which makes it virtually odour-free and it is not classed as a hazardous product.

Ready to use, FIX-R is a wet-on-wet system that becomes water repellent upon application. Reinforced with a polyester membrane, it provides strong adhesion to most conventional substrates, thereby providing excellent elasticity and tensile strength. FIX-R can be applied all year round and any unused product can be stored and reused – if sealed and stored between 4°C – 32°C – offering minimum wastage.

Richard Parker, Category Manager for flat roofing at SIG Roofing Supplies explains: “Contractors such as MSB Roofing based in Kent are quickly realising the benefits of FIX-R. Halfway through a recent 70m2 roof that they started in dry weather, it began to rain. However, after the rain stopped, they were able to go straight back on the roof and carry on from where they left off without the need to recoat. With no shrinkage and being fully resistant to standing water, it offers contractors a reliable, flexible and all-year round water proofing solution.”

Richard adds: “FIX-R is also incredibly versatile. As well as being perfect for green roofs, brown roofs and living walls – due to its root resistance – it can be used to tackle a myriad of other projects including detailing, up-stands, penetrations and terminations, fountains and water features. When used in conjunction with FIX-R Fabric, an even stronger waterproofing system is created.”

Also ideal for use on heritage properties and lead replacement, together with waterproofing gutters, FIX-R can also encapsulate asbestos or fibre cement, and even be used to waterproof profiled metal roofs. It is also a popular choice when recoating failed single ply roofs.

FIX-R Liquid Waterproofing

FIX-R – the dedicated brand of flat roofing products from SIG Roofing – has championed a series of demonstration and knowledge days specifically for flat roofs. Designed to help raise awareness of new products and build confidence in flat roofing amongst contractors and general builders, the live demonstrations will run regularly at selected training venues across the UK.

Spanning over the course of a morning, the demonstrations will cover everything that a contractor needs to know when approaching flat roof installations for either new build or refurbishment projects. They will take place across a range of the popular FIX-R products including; liquid waterproofing, EPDM, Torch on Felts and Roof Repair Solutions. Other flat roofing products such as GRP waterproofing, paints, pour and roll felts, asphalt, single ply, green roofs and insulation will also be covered.

Says SIG Roofing’s Category Manager for Flat Roofing, Richard Parker: “Over the years, continuous changes in legislation, customer requirements and new technology have led to an increasing number of waterproofing solutions being available to the contractor.”

“With so many options on the market, it is important that contractors understand the features of different products and the suitability to solve the variety of roofing issues that the contractor is likely to face. Crazy extended warranties on flat roofing products only serve to confuse matters further, particularly when the manufacturer goes out of business”, adds Richard

The demonstration and knowledge days will also compare differing waterproofing techniques and products in order that the contractor can make the right choice for the project, based on cost, skill level, expertise and even the tools required.

Richard continues: “When it comes to flat roof installations, there is a lucrative market out there for repair, replacement or new build. For those contractors that want to gain the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to tap into this market, help is now at hand.”

“We recognise that time is money, and that’s why our demonstrations only last a couple of hours and are available free of charge, with no pressure to purchase products. They are also designed to fit in around the contractor’s busy schedule, and by staging them at our UK wide training centres, they don’t need to go out of their way to attend,” concludes Richard.
